Movie Review - The Fighter

Movie Synopsis - The Fighter
Movie Trailer - The Fighter

When I first heard of The Fighter, I wasn't very attracted to it. I thought it would just be another boxing/fighting movie. I'm not a fan of such movie. The movie only caught my attention after Christian Bale won Best Supporting Actor during the recent Academy Award. In my opinion, Geoffrey Rush did a great job in The King's Speech. I think Geoffrey Rush deserve the award but if the award was given to Christian Bale, I guess his performance must be outstanding. So I went to watch the trailer and it got me into it immediately. I told Jas that we must catch this movie. At first she was quite reluctant towards my sudden change in mind but after much persuasion, she went with me.
In overall, the movie is a movie with everything in it. Both me and Jas were quite satisfy and happy with the movie. Even though it is not a movie that will give u the WOW feeling but it is definitely a movie that will draw a smile on your face.

The plot was good. The progress of the movie was acceptable. It is quite a long movie though but every aspect of a movie was covered. I can't remember any particular unresolved issue in the movie. Like I said earlier, after the movie, me and Jas felt satisfied.

The acting was notable. Christian Bale totally outshined Mark Wahlberg. Besides the Best Supporting Actor, Melissa Leo also won Best Supporting Actress for her heart-felt performance as Alice Ward, Dicky and Micky's mother. The scripts and casts were right. The casting team behind this movie must have put in a lot of effort to get the right people.

Overall, it was a great movie. Just lacking a bit of WOW factor that will definitely push the movie to a higher level.

I rate this movie a 3.5/5. A movie that brings the best out of a simple story.

Movie Review - Black Swan

Movie Synopsis - Black Swan
Movie Trailer - Black Swan

At last! I watched the Black Swan! I've read so many reviews on Black Swan and I've always wanted to watch. All the reviews said that it is good and it should win Best Picture in Academy Award but I beg to differ. Black Swan is good but Natalie Portman makes it excellent. So after watching the movie, I dare say that Natalie Portman is nonchalant when it comes to the Academy Award Best Actress spot. After finish watching the movie, me and Jas came out quite disappointed. It feels incomplete. The movie is all about Nina Sayers and nothing else. It's all about her.

Here's the annoying part. I don't even know if she died in the end. I'm still confuse on whether do Lily really exist or Lily is just an imaginary individual that Nina created to challenge herself. There were many questions left unanswered. Nina's mom, Erica (Barbara Hershey) is creepy. Sometimes it makes me wonder if she is real as well. I know sometimes it is fun to just let the audience write their own answers in the blanks but there were too many blanks to be filled in this movie. When you have too much of something, it becomes annoying.

Well, the best element in the movie is the acting of Natalie Portman. She is perfect. Her portrayal of Nina Sayers is excellent. She always have that paranoid look on her face. Her insecureness of her life is all drawn on the face. I simply love her performance. Her acting outdo everyone and everything in the movie. My attention was all drawn towards her facial expression and her acting.

To be cruel, in overall, i think the movie it is confusing, unsatisfying and disturbing but Natalie Portman's electrifying and astonishing performance make the movie worth watching. Well, I can't expect too much from all movies. Some movies have good plot but in this movie, it has great acting. So Black Swan is just slightly above average.

I think it is a 3.5/5 movie.

Movie Review - Temple Grandin

Movie Synopsis - Temple Grandin
Movie Trailer - Temple Grandin

This movie that I'm going to review on is not a main stream movie. Not many people know about this movie, Temple Grandin, until Claire Danes won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in Miniseries or Television Film Category. A colleague of mine introduced me to this movie. On one evening after work, some of my colleagues decide to sit down and watch it together. As a movie fan, I wouldn't miss any chances to catch a nice movie.

Temple Grandin is an awesomely inspiring movie. Temple Grandin's mom describe her daughter as different but not any lesser than any ordinary child. Her mom had faith in her and never gave up on her daughter. Temple Grandin is also a very determined and hard working woman. Nothing can stop her from achieving her dreams and targets in life. I felt so inspired after watching the movie.

Claire Danes gave her viewers a very memorable performance in this movie. Besides her acting, there is nothing much to shout about the movie. I find the movie quite dim. There were not many memorable scenes and the scripts were so-so. I expect her final speech to be very awe-inspiring but it was not as impactful as I thought it would be. It is just good enough but I'm very sure it can be better. I felt the flash backs were unnecessarily long and confusing. There should be more scenes on her childhood days and the mother-daughter bond.

Overall, it is a good weekend family movie. I rate it 2/5.

"Different but not less.."

Movie Review - The King's Speech

Movie Synopsis - The King's Speech
Movie Trailer - The King's Speech

The King's Speech is undoubtedly the most beautiful movie that I'd ever watched in this past decade. It might sound exaggerating but it is the truth. It has been a long time since I last watched a movie that can provide me with such satisfying feeling when I stepped out of the cinema. As we were walking to car park, all that Jas and me were talking about is how beautiful the movie is. I even told her that I couldn't find a single flaw in the movie for me to complain about. If you asked me to recall, the last movie that I can think of that gave me the same feeling was the movie "A Beautiful Mind" in 2001. It took me 10 years to find another movie that can give me the same feeling.

The King's Speech truly deserves the Academy Award for Best Picture. Colin Firth also deserved to be crown as Best Actor in the recent 83rd Academy Award. As I've said earlier, to me, The King's Speech is a flawless movie. Honestly speaking, just by reading the simple synopsis, it feels like a simple movie. The truth is, it is really a simple movie but it was beautifully produced, directed and delivered to the audience. This is the magic of Tom Hooper who undoubtedly deserve the Best Director award.

This movie is definitely cinema quality. It is worth every single cent you pay for the movie. Colin Firth carrie d the role of King George VI perfectly. His performance is astounding. I was surprised that Geoffrey Rush didn't win Best Supporting Actor. He was awesome in his role as Lionel Logue.

The scripts of the movie were nice done. It is very adaptive to the audience. The scripts were surprisingly easy to understand. If any layman were to put in just a little effort, they will find the movie very entertaining. The jokes were very soft and yet it will make you laugh. The degree of seriousness in the script were also nicely adjusted to suit the viewers. It tensed you up and will later calm you down.

Every other details about this movie that were not discussed here could be easily summed up with one word. Beautiful. Even the poster is beautiful.

Overall rating 4.5/5. If you still haven't watch The King's Speech, you better go catch it now. It is really good. It is a simple movie made beautifully.

Movie Review - The Rite

Movie Synopsis - The Rite
Movie Trailer - The Rite

The movie is very entertaining. In the movie, there were a lot of explanation and facts about exorcism that I find it very interesting. I've always enjoyed movies that talks about demon and exorcism. I always find it very fascinating.

In the overall, the movie was a great entertainment. It is not too long nor too short. It started at the right pace and develops at the good rhythm and ended a little after the climax. Just nice. Well, I felt that the producer should add maybe one more exorcism scene into the movie just to show some variety of behavior or actions exhibited by those whom got possessed. I would really appreciate if they could explain more about the demons because in the movie, they mentioned a few names like Ba'al, Leviathan and Beelzebub but they did not tell more about this demons.I know it is not important but it is more of informational pleasure to interested viewers like me. Well, I guess anyone who enjoyed watching The Exorcist or Exorcism of Emily Rose will definitely enjoy watching The Rite.

Besides that, Anthony Hopkins is fantastic! I don't think I can find another Academy Award winner that is as fabulous as Anthony Hopkins. His acting skill is irreplaceable especially in roles like that. His Hannibal Lecter aura is still in him despite his age. So horrifying roles like this is beyond any doubt his specialty.

The scripts were slightly difficult to understand though. Some of the terms used were very deep. So I think the viewers who had a vast range of vocabulary would have slightly more advantage while watching the movie.

I will give The Rite a rating of 3/5. Good entertainment and it is also not that scary for the frail hearted people.
