The film opens with Greg (Zachary Gordon) and his family went to the skating rink for the year's new Seventh Graders party. There he met his best friend Rowley (Robert Capron), classmates Fregley (Grayson Russell) and Chirag (Karan Brar). When he was catching up with his friends, suddenly he saw the pretty Holly Hills (Peyton R. List) and fell for her instantly. Chirag then told Greg all about Holly Hills. Curiously, Greg asked Chirag how he knows so much,Chirag told him that he googled her. Greg's older brother Rodrick (Devon Bostick) found out that Greg likes Holly. He dared Greg to dance with Holly when the DJ plays a slow song during the hour mark When it was almost time, Greg started to move nearer to Holly so he could asked her dance and she can't say no. When he got near Holly, Rodrick intervened and changed the song to a rock song. Upon hearing the rock song, Holly walked out of the rink. Greg was upset with his brother. He tried to get up but he fell. Their mother (Rachael Harris) saw his fell down in the rink and spoke to him on the loudspeaker, further humiliating him by getting his father (Steve Zahn) to carry him off the rink.
Weeks passed, their mom noticed that the boys don't get along too well. So on one morning, while having breakfast, she called for a family meeting. She came up with a plan to the relationship of the brothers. The plan was for each time they don't fight, they will be rewarded with Mom Bucks, which they can trade in for real money. The boys accepted the challenge and compete with each other to earn the Mom Bucks.
One day, the brothers saw a advertisement about a talent show. They took it as a big opportunity to be famous. Rowley suggested that he and Greg should go and perform magic tricks. Rodrick thought that it would be his band's big break. Greg and Rowley who always dreamt to be famous, filmed Rowley lip-synching "Tik Tok" by Ke$ha and wanted to upload it on Youtube but they find it not funny enough. By accident, Rowley sat on a sharp object and the incident was recorded by Greg. They thought it was funny an uploaded it on youtube but they only got 4 views.
On one Sunday morning, the Heffley family went to the church. Greg got extremely reluctant to go inside because he sat on a melted 3 Musketeers bar which was intentionally placed on his seat by Rodrick. Greg's pants was stained. In order to get him into the church, Greg's mom used a jacket to cover up the stain. Rodrick who wanted to humiliate Greg purposely stepped on the jacket while walking behind Greg. The jacket came off, revealing Greg's stained pants. Greg got angry and jumped on Rodrick. The boys end up in a scuffle on the floor of the church. As punishment the brothers were forced to spend a weekend together to bond, whilst their parents and youngest brother Manny went for a holiday.
Before their parents left, they were warned not to ask anyone over to the house. However, the brothers went against their parents'orders and hosted a party at the house. Rodrick tricked Greg to the basement and locked him in it. Greg managed to call Rowley and got him over to save him but Rodrick locked him up in the basement as well. While Rodrick were happily partying, his mom called. Greg managed to intercept the line and Rodrick had to let them out. When Greg and Rowley got out, both of them had the greatest time in their life. Greg and Rodrick also had lots of fun together during the party.
The next morning, the two received a call from their mom informing them that Manny fell sick and they are on their way home from the vacation. Both of them quickly clean the house. When they are done, they saw the bathroom door were marked with 'Rodrick Rules' in permanent marker. They found a door at the basement and both of them replaced the marked door with the new door before realizing it has no lock. Their mother noticed it after a while and the confronted Greg. Greg who felt guilty over it confess to the mom. However, he told the mom that the party was only a band rehearsal. He also added that both him and Rodrick had lots of fun together during the party. Hence, the two escaped punishment.
The two brothers become friends since then. Greg asked Rodrick for advice on Holly Hills, but his attempts failed and embarrassed him instead. That night, the boys went out to have fun, with their mother's warning to be home at 9. Both of them had fun in the mall and pulling pranks on other people with fake vomit. When the two brothers got home, their father accidentally found photos of the party. The boys were punished. Greg was grounded for two weeks with no video games, and Rodrick was grounded for a month and was forbid from participating in the talent show. The brothers relationship gone bad and they were force to spend the weekend with their grandfather in his retirement home.
Whilst there, Greg ran into Holly, who was visiting her grandmother. Both of them had some heart to heart family talk. That night, before he sleeps, Greg wrote about his feelings for Holly on his Diary. The next morning, Greg woke up upon hearing Rodrick reading his diary out loud. Rodrick then threatened to tell Holly and ran towards the lobby. Greg only in his underwear, chased after Rodrick and managed to snatch away the diary. He ran towards the bathroom and started ripping out the pages of the diary to flush them down the toilet. However, he didn't realised that he was in the ladies room. A lady saw him in there and accused him of being a Peeping Tom but managed to escape from the angry lady. He came back and found out that Rodrick had his embarassing moments recorded on tape and threatened to show it to everyone.
At the night of the talent show, Rowley's eight-year-old assistant Scotty got stage fright. Greg's mom said that Greg will do the show with Rowley, but Greg refused. Greg noticed that Rodrick was about to cry because he was not allowed to play at the talent show. Greg then bargained with his mom that if he will perform with Rowley, she will let Rodrick perform as well. His mom was touched by his love for his brother and accepted the bargain. Greg and Rowley's Magic Show was a hit. Holly Hills came to backstage to visit Greg whilst other girls are getiing Rowley's autograph. Next, Rodrick and his band performed. They sang their song Exploded Diper. The crowd wasn't impressed. The crowd were more impressed by their mom who was dancing at the side of the stage. The film ended with Rodrick driving Greg to school. Rodrick thanked Greg for convincing their mom to let him play at the show. The boys forgave each other and Rodrick gave the tape back to Greg.
At the end of the movie, Greg posted the video of Rodrick in the talent show on Youtube and named it "Lame Band with Crazy Dancing Mom", then Rodrick shouted that he will kill Greg.
