Movie Synopsis - Brothers

Sam Cahill (Tobey Maguire) and Tommy Cahill (Jake Gyllenhaal) are brothers. Sam was a steadfast family man who married his high school sweetheart, Grace (Natalie Portman). They had two young daughters, Isabelle and Maggie (Bailee Madison, Taylor Grace Geare).

The movie opens with Tommy being released from jail for armed robbery. Not long after that, as a marine, Sam was sent to Afghanistan for duty. During his duty at Afghanistan, Sam's helicopter was attacked and crashed. All the Marines on board was killed. Soon, the bad news came to the family. Everyone grieved over it, not knowing that in reality, Sam and his hometown friend, Private Joe Willis (Patrick Flueger), was kidnapped by a group of terrorist in a mountain village.

With Sam "dead", Tommy being the only son left in the family, he wanted to keep the family strong and happy just like before. He also wanted to proof to his family that he had changed and he will not looked for trouble anymore. He started off by repairing the kitchen for Grace and the kids. He had some of his friends over to help him. Everyone was happy with his work and slowly, he was once again accepted into the family. Grace also slowly let down her guards towards her brother in law.

As months passed, Grace and Tommy's bond grew stronger. The girls also grew more fond towards their uncle. On one night, Grace and Tommy couldn't held back their feelings to each other, they shared a kiss. As they were kissing, guilty conscious kicked in and both backed away. They regretted it. No one took this attraction any further.

Meanwhile, in Afghanistan, Sam and Joe are abused and tortured by terrorists. The terrorists eventually find Joe useless and was a waste of resources. They forced Sam to batter Joe to death. Sometime later, the army came and rescued Sam. Sam returned home, overly traumatized by his experience. He kept his killing of Joe to himself. He was disturbed by the thought and eventually he turned paranoid and confused. He also displayed abusive character and the girls were afraid of him. Grace spotted something amissed with Sam. She asked him again and again but he refused to explain to his family what happened while he was in Afghanistan. Sam also started to suspect that Tommy and Grace had a sexual relationship while he was away. Sam confronted Tommy first but Tommy found it ridiculous for the brother to think like that so he just ignored the question. Later, Sam confronted Grace and she told him the truth that she and Tommy only kissed and nothing further happen.

During Maggie's birthday party, in the attempt to make her father angry, the jealous Isabelle lied that Tommy and Grace had sex every night when Sam were gone. Upon hearing that, Sam snapped. He remained calm until he reached home. He make sure that the girls were tucked into bed before he went berserk and started destroying the newly renovated kitchen. Tommy came to set things right between them. Sam pulled a pistol on Tommy who tried to stop his brother. The police arrived. Sam grew more angry. He went out screaming who called the police and dared the police to shoot him. Tommy came out asking the police to hold their fire and tried to calm Sam down. The already frantic Sam pulled the trigger and fired a shot into the air. Then, he held the gun up against his head. Grace cried and begged Sam to stop. Sam surrendered. He was admitted to a mental hospital.

Grace went to visit him. Once again, she ask Sam what happen to him in Afghanistan. Out of frustration, she threatened him that if he does not tell her what is tormenting him, he will never see her again. Sam finally confided that he killed Joe. Upon hearing the truth, Grace teared and she gave him a comforting hug.
