Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg) is an Irish-American welterweight boxer from a working class family in Lowell, Massachusetts. He is managed by his mother, Alice Ward (Melissa Leo), and trained by his older half-brother, Dicky Eklund (Christian Bale). Micky didn't enjoy a successful career. Meanwhile, his half brother Dicky was a former boxer who knocked down Sugar Ray Leonard in an HBO televised match. Since then, Dicky's career fell apart because he was addicted to crack cocaine.

On the night of a fight in Atlantic City, Micky's scheduled opponent fell ill. Micky was rescheduled to fight with  a substitute who was 18 pounds heavier than Micky. Despite Micky's reservations, his mother and brother agree with the match. Micky was defeated by the much heavier opponent in a one sided match. Frustrated and embarrassed by his defeat, Micky retreated from the boxing world and fell in love with Charlene Fleming (Amy Adams), a bartender.

After a few weeks, Alice arranged another fight for Micky. Micky hesitated and turned down the fight. His mother and sisters accused Charlene for lowering down Micky's spirit and motivation. At that time, Micky also received an offer to be paid to train in Las Vegas. Upon finding out about the offer, Dicky sais that he will match the offer so Micky can keep training and working with his family. Dicky then tries to get money by asking his girlfriend to post as a prostitute. When she picked up a client, he will impersonate as a police officer to steal the client's car. His plan failed and he was arrested.  Micky try to stop the police from bashing up his brother, but a police officer broke his hand before arresting him. At trial, Micky was released but Dicky was sent to jail.

On the night where HBO showed the documentary on Dicky. Dicky was horrified to see that the title is High on Crack Street: Lost Lives in Lowell. It is a documentary about how crack addiction ruined Dicky's career and life. Feeling devastated and ashamed, Dicky began training and tried to get his life together in prison.
Meanwhile, Micky was convinced by his father to return to the boxing ring. He managed to gather a training team and found a new manager, Sal Lonano. Micky was arranged to start with minor fights to regain his confidence.

After a few victories, he was offered a major fight against an undefeated boxer. During a prison visit, Dicky taught Micky on how to knock out his opponent but Micky couldn't help it but to think that his brother was selfish and didn't care much about how he felt. They got into a heated argument, resulting in both of them storming out. During the actual match, Micky was nearly defeated at the beginning but after remembering his brother's advice, he changed his fight tactic and he won.

Upon his release from prison, Dicky and his mother went to see Micky train. Assuming that things were still the same, Dicky prepared to spar with his brother, but Micky told him that he's no longer a part of his current team. Micky and Dicky spar but Micky knocked Dicky down. Dicky stormed off and everyone thought that he went to the crack house to get high again. Micky's mother talked to Micky, and told him that she always favored Dicky. Dicky returned to his crack house to say goodbye to his friends. He then headed to Charlene's home and told her that Micky needs both of them. They need to work together to bring out the best from Micky. After everyone got back together, they travelled to London for the title fight. Micky scored another upset victory and the welterweight title.
