Movie Synopsis - Thor

In 965 A.D, Odin (Anthony Hopkins), King of Asgard, fought a war against the Frost Giants of Jotunheim to prevent them from conquering the Nine Realms. The Asgardian warriors defeated the Frost Giants leader Laufey (Colm Feore) and his army. Odin seized the source of their power, the Casket of Ancient Winters and brought it back to Asgard.

In present days, while Odin's son Thor (Chris Hemsworth) prepared himself to take over the throne of Asgard,  the Frost Giants came to Asgard, attempting to retrieve the Casket. The Frost Giants action angers Thor. Against his father's order, Thor, accompanied by his brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston), his childhood friend Sif (Jaimie Alexander) and the Warriors Three Volstagg (Ray Stevenson), Fandral (Joshua Dallas) and Hogun (Tadanobu Asano) travels to Jotunheim to confront Laufey and his troop of Frost Giants. The egoistic Thor fought the giants even though he knew that they were outnumbered. They fought mightily but the number of Frost Giants was just too many for them. The giants forced to the cliff.

Suddenly, Odin appeared and save them. Due to Thor's arrogance, Odin stripped Thor off his Godly powers and exiled him to Earth. Odin then threw his hammer, Mjolnir— the source of his power to Earth and protect it with a spell that only allowed only the worthy to wield it. The one who possessed the hammer will have Thor's power.

Thor landed in New Mexico. Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), her assistant Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) and mentor Dr. Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgard) accidentally knocked him unconscious with their car. The local people found Mjolnir and tried many ways to pull it out from the ground. S.H.I.E.L.D agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) ransacked Jane's laboratory and took away Jane's data about the wormhole that delivered Thor to Earth.

After Thor found out about Mjolnir's location, he went to the site to retrieve his hammer but he was unable to lift it. He was captured by S.H.I.E.L.D. With Selvig's help, he was freed and decided to stay in Earth as he developed a romance with Jane.

However in Asgard, Loki discovered that he is Laufey's son, adopted by Odin after the war ended. He confronted Odin and forced him to fall into the deep "Odinsleep" that allows him to recuperate. Loki took the throne. He offered Laufey the chance to kill Odin and retrieved the Casket.

Unhappy with Loki's actions, Sif and the Warriors three convinced Heimdall (Idris Elba), gatekeeper of the Bifröst Bridge to allow them passage to Earth so that they could return Thor from exile. After Loki found out about their plan, Loki sent the Destroyer, an indestructible-robot-looking figure to kill Thor and his friends. Sif and the Warriors Three found Thor.

Soon after they found Thor, the Destroyer arrived and started a massacre in the small town. They fought the Destroyer but the Destroyer was invulnerable. Thor offerred himself to the Destroyer and asked the Destroyer to spare his friends. The Destroyer struck Thor. Thor's near death sacrifice proved him worthy to wield Mjolnir again. The hammer returned itself to him, restoring his powers and allowing him to defeat the Destroyer. He and his fellow warriors decided to travel back to Asgard to confront Loki.

Before he left, he kissed Jane goodbye and promised her that he will be back. In Asgard, Loki betrayed Laufey and killed him. He planned that assassination of Odin so that he could kill Laufey to prove himself worthy to Odin. Loki then planned to destroy Jotunheim using the Bifröst Bridge. Thor arrived and fought his brother just in time as Loki was about to destroy Jotunheim. In order to stop the Bifröst Bridge from destroying Jotunheim, Thor had to destroy the Bifröst Bridge. Odin woke up and prevented the brothers from falling off the destroyed bridge. However, Loki let go of his grip to fall to his apparent death after realizing that he disappointed Odin again. Feeling mournful towards the death of his brother, Thor admitted to Odin that he is not ready to be king. While on Earth, Jane and her research team continued their search for the portal to Asgard so that she can reunite with Thor.

After the credits, there was a scene where Selvig were taken to a S.H.I.E.L.D. facility. There, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) asked him to study an unnamed device, which Fury says may hold untold power. Loki, invisible, whispered to Selvig to agree, which Selvig did.
