The movie open with Renai and Josh Lambert (Rose Byrne and Patrick Wilson) moved into a new house with their three children. One morning, Renai was looking at the family photo album with her son, Dalton (Ty Simpkins) and he asks why there are no pictures of his Dad when his Dad was a child. Renai explained to him that Josh was bad at keeping photos. Dalton then told Renai that he is scared of his new room. She calms him down by telling him that he just need time to get used to his new room. She then stacked a few books on a nearby shelf. Later, she found the books lying on the floor.
One night, while Dalton was playing upstairs, he heard noises coming from the attic. Being curious, he went to investigate. He fell off an old ladder while trying to turn on the light. He screamed after looking at a shadowy corner in the attic. Renai and Josh rushed up to find him in the attic, Josh then tucked Dalton into bed. The next day, Dalton did not wake up. He fell into an unexplained coma.
Three months later, they brought him home to take care of him while he was still in a coma. The next few days, disturbing events begin to occur. Renai heard weird noises of someone whispering upstairs in the baby's room through the baby monitor. When she went up,there was no one up there. Renai believed that the house was haunted and confronted Josh about the experiences. He did not believe her, so Renai showed him a bloody handprint on Dalton's bed sheets.
One night, Renai was almost attacked by a mysterious man in the bedroom. The house alarm was triggered and Josh rushed to Renai, but there were no one else in the room except her. Josh finally agreed to move.
In the new house, the haunting events did not stop. Josh's mother, Lorraine (Barbara Hershey), believed Renai's stories of the haunting and contacted an old friend, Elise Reiner (Lin Shaye). She deals with paranormal activity. When Elise reached, she and her team went straight into Dalton's room. There, she saw something crawling on the ceiling. She described it to one of her men and he drew it. It is a dark, demonic figure with a red face and claws. Elise explained to Renai and Josh that Dalton is in great danger. He had the ability to astral project. That means he can wander around the parallel spirit world. He had been doing it since long time ago but this time Dalton had wandered too far from his physical body. He went to a place called "the Further. She also told them that his astral projection has attracted a powerful demon. The demon captured Dalton into "the Further", separating him from his body in the hopes that he can take over the body. Elise and Lorraine revealed to the couple that Josh was also gifted with the ability to astral project. He was followed by a spirit during his childhood. Lorraine showed them pictures from Josh's childhood. In each picture, there will be a shadowy old woman who lurked closer and closer to Josh. Elise suggested that Josh should utilize his ability to enter "The Further" and rescue Dalton. Josh disagreed instantly, thinking it was ridiculous.
Later, he discovered that Dalton had been drawing pictures of his dreams and there were also drawings on that powerful demon. Elise taught Josh on how to enter "The Further". Josh found Dalton. Dalton was imprisoned by the powerful demon. He rescued him and took him out of the room. The red-faced demon was behind their back, chasing after them. When he reached his house in "The Further", Josh asked Dalton to run and go back to his body. Josh then confronted the old woman. He repeatedly yells at the old woman that he is not afraid of her. The old woman retreated. Josh awoken. So did Dalton.
Later, Elise noticed something strange about Josh. She took the camera and snapped a picture of him. Suddenly, Josh went into a rage and strangled Elise, killing her. Renai heard the noise and ran to the room, only to find Elise dead. She called out to Josh, but received no answer. She picked up the camera and she saw the picture of the old woman but not Josh. Josh appeared behind Renai and grabbed her shoulder. She turned around looking terrified as the screen turned black and the credits rolled.
